When it comes to new real estate construction projects over the past decade, Texas dominates the rest of the country, with five cities finishing in the top five. A StorageCafe survey found that Houston was on top of the heap when it comes to homebuilding, apartments, self storage, industrial and office since 2013. San Antonio, Austin, Ft. Worth and Dallas rounded out the top five.

The city of Houston registered the largest number of single family homes being permitted from 2013 to 2022, around 55,600 units. Permits for almost 90,000 new apartments have been issued in Houston during the same timeframe.

About 5.7 million square feet of storage space was added to the local inventory over the past ten years. Houston ranks first nationally for industrial construction as well, with almost 66 million million square feet of new industrial space erected over the past decade, and second for office space construction, seeing 27 million square feet of new office space.
