Why Big Thinkers Can’t Stop Talking About ‘Black Panther’

Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), left, and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) battle it out in a fight fueled by dueling visions of resource management. MARVEL STUDIOS Academics can’t stop talking about Black Panther. Sure, it’s just a movie. A superhero action movie. But it’s also a movie about an (admittedly fictional) African nation that, in the absence of colonialists, shaped itself through careful governance into a thriving society. And so on Twitter, in newspapers and just about anywhere you look, researchers, professors and African leading lights are talking about Wakanda. “No one wants to get roped into this discussion, but it’s so hard not to!” Chris W.J. Roberts, a political science instructor at the University of Calgary, tweeted, before div...

Is it Pennywise? Pa. town sees red balloons floating above sewer grate

It appears that a homicidal clown could be lurking beneath the streets of a small eastern Pennsylvania town. Red balloons have been tied to the sewer grates in the town of Lititz and police have taken to Facebook to tell the prankster to please refrain from replacing the balloons that they’re removing, The Associated Press reported. The red balloon is what Pennywise, the child-eating clown who lives in the sewers of Stephen King’s novel “It” uses as a calling card. A movie remake hits theaters Friday. Police said in their post that they were “completely terrified” by the balloons and “respectfully request they do not do that again.” After the post went viral, the police department decided to take its investigation to another level, having the department’s criminal investigative division lo...

Hollywood movies have worst summer in 11 years

Is it time to abandon the franchise ship? It hasn’t been a good summer for the U.S. box office, as cinemas have seen their worse turnout for years. According to comScore, this year’s summer box office revenue in the US will be at its lowest since 2006. Predicted to come in at just $3.78 billion, the revenue would be nearly 16% lower than last summer’s take. Box Office Mojo has also predicted that attendance figures and ticket sales for this summer will mark a 25-year low in cinematic entertainment in the U.S. Who’s to blame? There are a few contenders. The recent trend in franchises and cinematic universes proved to be problematic for cinema houses this year, as a slew of big-budget, low-earning sequels and reboots failed to impress audiences. Transformers: The Last...

Thus, with the multiplexes bare for the next two weeks, now’s the ideal time to catch up on the best features set to leave Netflix in September.
