Six months later, Google’s Pixel 2 is still one of the best phones in the world

It’s hard to overstate how good Google’s Pixel line of smartphones are. For my money, they’re the best smartphones available. The gorgeous Pixel 2.Ben Gilbert / Business Insider They run a clean, sleek, fast operating system. They have great cameras for capturing sharp, vibrant photos and video. They cost far less than the competition — literally hundreds of dollars less than the closest equivalent Apple iPhone. The Pixel line looks great, but still prioritizes function over needless visual upgrades. I’ve been using the Pixel 2 for a few weeks now, transitioning from the Pixel 1 directly, and I’m convinced it’s the best smartphone available — with one caveat. Here’s why: 1. Price: At $650, it’s the best value for any flagship smartphone. Holl...

Kodi SHOCK – Lengthy jail sentence handed out as piracy crackdown continues

Kodi crackdown continues as lengthy jail sentence handed out KODI add-on fans have been put on alert after a lengthy jail sentence was handed out in the UK. The Kodi crackdown continues as a court in Britain has issued a hefty jail sentence to scammers that profited from illegal Kodi add-ons. Research has suggested Kodi – which offers access to thousands of channels – is being used in more than five million UK homes. Kodi software is not illegal, but developers can produce third-party add-ons that provide free access to pirated and illegal content. These apps allow users to stream premium content, like paid-for sports, movie channels and TV shows for free. The illegal add-ons are being targeted by ISPs, government agencies, broadcasters and rights holders. And now a court in Wa...

5 Ways 5G Technology Will Change Your Life

5G was the buzzword at the Mobile World Congress, the biggest annual conference and exhibition for the mobile industry, held this week in Barcelona, Spain. Companies plastered the venue hallswith prominent slogans, from “5G is now”, “Leading 5G innovation” and “Network towards 5G” to “5G is happening faster than we expected”. Those catchphrases about the next generation of ultra-fast wireless technology may mean little to most people outside the mobile industry. Yet 5G is what will enable a lot of the science fiction-like technologies being talked about today, such as autonomous cars and smart cities. How Fast Is Fast? On a 5G network, a connected car travelling at 100 kilometres per hour (62 miles per hour) will have moved just 2.8 centimetr...

The iPhone, the Pixel, and the tragic anxiety of having to choose

One man’s descent into madness born out of having too many options I’ve had a restless weekend that’s spilling over into my work week. Or maybe it’s more accurate to say that my work week has spilled over into my weekend. Whatever it is, I’ve been gripped by a fever of indecision caused by comparing Apple’s iPhone X and Google’s Pixel 2 XL side by side. I’m that rare human that has access to both phones and the ecosystem flexibility to not be immediately tied to iOS or Android. As a result, I’ve now become a most wretched electronics consumer, spoiled by the bounties on offer before me and paralyzed to choose between them. Things didn’t use to be so neurotic. Ever since the release of the original Google Pixel in late 2016 — a moment that coincided with Apple dropping the headphone jack fr...

Why Blockchain Matters to Small Businesses

The technology can be used for much more than cryptocurrency. Image credit: Shutterstock Nikolai Kuznetsov • Guest Writer There are many disadvantages small and medium-sized ventures face in the current business atmosphere. Despite their status as the backbone of any major economy and integral to GDP growth and other national metrics, smaller firms face high barriers to entry and low insulation from conditions that would barely scratch their larger peers. The current regulatory environment is purpose-built for companies that are several magnitudes larger, and makes it hard to find financing, scale operations, process payments and recruit other ancillary services that are both necessary and yet monopolize the time and resources of small businesses. Make gadgets great again

Many products at CES want to fill previously unimagined moments of your life with additional stimulation.  less LAS VEGAS – A sad cycle has overtaken the gadget business. It started this week at CES, tech’s biggest annual convention, where inventors compete to connect the most random things to the internet. This year’s “smart” stuff includes pillows, air fresheners and even toilets. A few months from now we’ll see different headlines: That smart thing you bought is actually spying on you. (You can learn a lot about a guy through his pillow. Or toilet.) Sooner or later, the story gets worse: You...

Wearable Tech Blurs Line Between Gadgets and Medical Equipment

The health-monitoring features of smartwatches and wearable devices are creating new opportunities in the world of medicine. Tech experts at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show were bullish about the role wearable gadgets could play as medical devices going forward. (Getty Images) LAS VEGAS – The pursuit of health and wellness, on the surface, seems like a strange feature for the Consumer Electronics Show – an annual Las Vegas expo celebrating the latest and greatest in technology like 4K television screens, virtual reality gaming and nearly every futuristic gadget under the sun. But next-generation health monitoring – and the construction of machines and technology to better diagnose and treat particular maladies – were all the rage at CES 2018. With watches, phones and jewelry no...

This eye-catching new phone out of China is a great example of where the future of smartphones is headed

Japanese electronics maker Sharp on Tuesday revealed a new smartphone, the Aquos S2, that furthers the most dominant trend with modern smartphones: the death of the bezel. Sharp’s Aquos S2, left, next to Apple’s iPhone 7.Sharp In phone-speak, “bezels” are the borders around a smartphone’s display. On the iPhone 7 in the above photo, for instance, the bezels are pretty sizable compared to those on the Aquos S2. Over the past several months, however, various smartphone manufacturers have made it a point to shrink those borders. The idea is to make it so you have more display space for watching videos and playing games without lugging around a giant device. Chinese phone maker Xiaomi trimmed the bezels of its Mi Mix phone late last year, while the most recent flagships...

The Xbox One X and PS4 Pro prove the old console cycle is dead

For almost all of console gaming history, a game’s graphics were written in stone. Barring remakes and re-releases, Mario 64, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, etc, look the same to everyone playing. Unlike PCs, where visual fidelity correlates strongly with your rig (and wallet), consoles democratized the gaming experience. The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X change all that. For the first time, console gamers have the option to play the same games with better graphics within the same generation. But by the same token, they are also proof the traditional console cycle, predicated on dramatic jumps in visual fidelity, is on the way out. And it’s about time. Better graphics, same games The Pro and X allow developers to enable graphical enhancements for existing games. These high-end console offer a...
