Lendlease Breaks Ground on the Largest Geothermal Residential Building in New York State
Lendlease and joint venture partner Aware Super have commenced construction on 1 Java Street, an 834-unit residential development along the Greenpoint waterfront in Brooklyn that will be New York State’s largest geothermal residential building.
In addition to the geothermal system, 1 Java Street will be fully electric and use no natural gas, aligning with Lendlease’s Mission Zero goal of achieving absolute zero carbon by 2040. The development will set aside 30% of units as affordable housing and feature a new public waterfront esplanade with a living shoreline and 13,000 square feet of neighborhood-oriented retail space. 1 Java Street represents the sixth project developed and operated as part of the Aware Super and Lendlease joint venture Americas multifamily portfolio, which achieved net zero carbon in 2021.
“1 Java Street pushes the boundaries of what is possible for socially and environmentally sustainable living in New York,” said Claire Johnston, CEO of Lendlease USA.
